Corinth Canal closed for the foreseeable future

While the world was concentrating on the closure of the Suez Canal due to the Evergreen incident, another Mediterranean canal suffered damages that will have adverse impacts on the yachting season: landslides have affected the Corinth Canal that has now been closed for several months.

Even though repair work has begun, the Canal will remain closed to navigation for the foreseeable future and might not reopen before 2022. Ships travelling to the Aegean seas will have to take the longer route around the Peloponnesian peninsula.
