Clarification regarding STCW 'refresher' training To All news 22 January 2017 The MCA has issued MIN 535 to update MIN 520 and so reduce the confusion in some parts of our industry about the requirements for seafarers to undergo what is known as 'refresher' training. In particular, it: Shows the extent to which training certificates from other flag administrations will be accepted by the MCA States clearly that everyone applying for a new CoC or upgrading/revalidating an existing CoC must submit documentary evidence that they have completed initial training or refresher training for Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Proficiency in Survival Crafts and Rescue Boats and Advanced Fire Fighting within the last five years. (Some seafarers will also need a certificate for Fast Rescue Boats) Gives details of what evidence seafarers must have with them when aboard. States that you don’t need to refresh Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Elementary First Aid and Medical First Aid. Confirms that if crew hold a UK CoC, they do not need to do the full courses again, just the refresher courses Clarifies that the Advanced Sea Survival certificate may be accepted in lieu of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, however, your Certificate of Competency will be endorsed with the following limitation: “Not for use on ships equipped with davit launched lifeboats”. States that the non-STCW Advanced Sea Survival must be updated every 5 years in line with Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats. The MCA would recommend all seafarers hold an STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Certificate of Proficiency, due to potential problems of Port State Control Officers outside of the UK not accepting non-STCW Advanced Sea Survival. Seagoing members are recommended to study this MIN and make sure they are fully compliant with the various requirements. This conflict can, in turn, lead to additional stress, tiredness and severed relationships.  10 Tips for Conflict Resolution Onboard To All news 4 September 2020 As we near the end of the Mediterranean season, the pressure of working long hours under demanding conditions might be causing tension or conflict onboard amongst crew membes. This conflict can, in turn, lead to additional stress, tiredness and severed relationships. If you find yourself caught up in a dispute with a fellow crew member, or are struggling with a tense and strained working environment, you can follow our ten tips for conflict resolution onboard. Nip it in the bud, quick: The best step to easing conflict onboard is to confront all crew members involved, as quickly as possible to ensure a solution is reached. Not addressing conflict quickly might allow tensions to rise and worsen the situation further. Listen: Captains or senior crew members need to discuss the conflict with all parties to understand what has happened, when did it happen, why has it happened, how can it be fixed? Come together: all crew need to be brought together to voice their concerns or frustrations in a professional manner. Common ground: Senior members need to encourage those involved to find common ground and agree on workable solutions to all problems. Find a compromise: For the sake of working together, each crew member must be willing to give in a little. Explaining the detrimental effect of conflict onboard should hopefully defuse tensions and push those involved towards concession. Confront negative feelings: Crew might be feeling a range of emotions, including hurt, frustration or anger. These feelings should be discussed and diffused. Leadership: Senior crew members can help ease tensions and defuse conflict by reminding crew of their role onboard and mentoring those crew members who might need extra support or assistance. Teamwork: Remind crew about the importance of teamwork onboard and provide them with tools to improve how they work together. Time out: If possible, allow crew members to take a few minutes of time out each day to improve their ability to manage stress and tension onboard. The bigger picture : Encourage crew to focus on the bigger picture, including why they joined the industry and the areas of their role they enjoy the most. It's always worth reminding crew that simply saying 'sorry' and demonstrating mutual respect for other crew members is vital to a professional and happy work environment. Hill Robinson and Sanlorenzo are concluding the/2021 Sanlorenzo Crew Academy, which has seen eight cadets complete 600hrs of classroom and on-board crew training. The next stage is gaining valuable operational experience on board, either assisting the Interior or Deck departments. Hill Robinson and Sanlorenzo Academy seek yachts to take students To All news 24 March 2021 We are seeking yachts in the Ligurian Region (due to travel restrictions) who can take our students on and provide an opportunity for Deck/Interior role experience under the relevant Head of Department during normal crew working hours. Note that yachts are not expected to pay the students – this is part of an Internship Placement which will assist them in attaining necessary hours towards graduation from the Sanlorenzo Crew Academy. Students are between the ages of 24-35yrs, have their own accommodation, are trained across all areas of working on-board, plus have all necessary qualifications. While the Academy benefits greatly from your kind assistance, we also hope to benefit your current crew and yacht should you be willing to take on an extra hand (or two!) in preparation for the coming season. The latest regulations address anchorage of 24+ meter LOA vessels in Western Corsica (Arrêté # 168/2023) and in the Bay of Calvi (Arrêté # 189/2023). Areas of interest include: Considering that the action of anchoring and stopping French and foreign vessels in the French internal and territorial waters of the Mediterranean is a matter for the navigation police and public order at sea - which is the responsibility of the Maritime Prefect. Anchoring or stopping is the responsibility of the ship's captain, the skipper, or any person in charge or in control of the vessel. The rules governing the safe passage of foreign vessels in French territorial waters defined by the Préfet Maritime. France's obligations to preserve the good ecological status of its waters. Considering the scientific studies communicated to the Préfet Maritime showing the worsening degradation of Posidonia meadows linked to the anchoring of large vessels (over 24 meters in length overall). Considering the need to regulate the anchoring and stopping of vessels with French or foreign flags in French inland and territorial Mediterranean waters, in order to defend the sovereign rights and interests of the Nation, maintain public order, safeguard people and property, and protect the environment. The 2024 Sea Changes Forum at the Monaco Yacht Show brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the yachting industry to tackle key issues such as training, welfare, safety, and new & upcoming regulations.  Held at the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) headquarters in Monaco on September 26th, this year’s forum featured insightful presentations from leading maritime policymakers and industry experts. First classes are expected to be opened in Spring 2025. Introduced the new Yacht Mental Health & Wellbeing course “a conduit towards a long-term solution to Mental Health issues within the Yachting Industry” also under the IAMI-GUEST Program.   16:19 Angela Wallace,   Director of Interior Training, Head of Welfare Group, PYA  - who shared insights on the welfare of the yachting industry through statistics from Yacht Crew Help .   16:27 Ajit Jacob,   Chief Examiner, Head of Seafarers Technical Delivery, UK Seafarer Services, Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA ) - discussed the modernization program the MCA has gone through, updating a lot of the syllabuses with current needs. The consultation for the Approved Electric propulsion course (AEPC), covering batteries, electronics on electric and hybrid vessels, appropriate first actions in case of failure, etc., has been approved. A draft Merchant Shipping Notice (MSN) on the modernization of the Master 500 Restricted CoC transferability to other sectors is available for consultation. The MCA also announced that they are creating a pathway to a Master Yacht Unlimited size , removing the 3000 GT limitation. Developments will be followed closely by the PYA because it is of particular interest to long term career Deck Officers. Port State authorities are not formally obliged to accept these certificates for use in their waters, but to date, they are unaware of any which do not, other than on rare occasions where anti-social behaviour has been demonstrated by the operators of the craft. The RYA Yachtmaster celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, which also saw the 100,000th RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence issued, a fitting milestone for such a special year. It’s that time of year in the Mediterranean and other northern hemisphere yachting locations when many vessels are lined up in ports for the winter whilst a portion of their crew stay onboard to undertake the important task of ‘winterising’, as well as other key maintenance jobs which didn’t get addressed during the busy summer months of chartering. Important tasks for your crew this winter To All news 3 December 2020 It’s that time of year in the Mediterranean and other northern hemisphere yachting locations when many vessels are lined up in ports for the winter whilst a portion of their crew stay onboard to undertake the important task of ‘winterising’, as well as other key maintenance jobs which didn’t get addressed during the busy summer months of chartering. Whilst most crew recognise the importance of the maintenance and refit work that vessels undergo during the winter, many forget the importance of crew management, planning and team building. In fact, the winter months are a great opportunity to reflect on the peak periods during the summer season and put in place new structures in crew leadership, management and wellbeing to ensure the long-term success of your team onboard. Here are some key tasks to add to your winter schedule: Leadership Has your leadership team completed HELM training? The 2010 ’Manila’ amendments to the STCW convention introduced a requirement for management and leadership training for all ships’ officers. HELM training can be beneficial to all leadership roles onboard and teaches crew the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective team member and team leader. Leadership structures and training In addition to HELM training, Captains should use the winter to reassess the leadership structures onboard their vessel. There should be clearly-defined leadership roles and reporting structures onboard, so that all crew understand the management structure of the vessel. It’s also important that your management team is aligned to a unified leadership strategy and have the skills necessary to enforce this leadership strategy onboard. Luxury Hospitality runs onboard or video conference leadership coaching for vessels and can teach crew the key skills to manage their team onboard. Impact Crew can also work with your senior crew onboard to develop their skills and turn them into the leaders. ‘The leadership team must be united and equipped with the tools to deal with the challenges that crew throw at them, from dealing with discipline and conflicts, to being empathetic and supportive, all while being consistent and fair. Crew need their leaders to motivate and inspire them, as well as empower and help them grow. And then they need to be flexible to adapt to crew’s different ages, nationalities and drivers. Conflict resolution We previously ran the ‘Leadership & Conflict Resolution’ webinar providing some guidance to leaders onboard. The winter is a great time to conduct annual reviews with your crew where underlying issues and conflicts can be addressed. To get some more tips and advice on conflict resolution, watch our webinar . Crew Wellbeing & Mental Health Crew mental health can often get pushed aside during the busy summer months, but it's important for leaders to use downtime to address their crew mental health and put in place some safeguarding structures which ensure crew wellbeing is maintained. This can include reassessing work/rest schedules to ensure that crew have enough downtime to recuperate from the high season and focus on their mental health. In addition, Captains should ensure all crew have taken their required holiday or have the ability to leave the vessel to visit family and friends. Many crew can benefit onboard mental health coaching. ISWAN and The Crew Coach currently offer courses on mental health and wellbeing. Team building Captains can use the extra time during the winter to invest in onboard team building activities. This includes a range of activities, including taking your crew out for joint activity such as bowling, golf, skiing or simply a crew dinner. In addition, running onboard training exercises which boost team bonding and morale are incredibly valuable.
