Mike started yachting as a teenager teaching dingy sailing and, after serving a basic apprenticeship on sail training vessels, cruising, racing, and navigational courses at the Island Cruising Club in Salcombe.

Shortly after gaining the RYA yacht master at the age of 18, Mike completed the Yacht Master Instructor course and continued with RYA training in the Solent.

In 1989 Mike took a job with the British government and headed to Sudan where he ran a research based development project aimed at establishing the potential benefits of using modern sail shapes in an artisanal fishery.

Following this project, Mike stayed in the development and relief sector with the UN; working in Sierra Leone, Somalia, Iraq, Kenya and Armenia and completed a Master’s degree in development studies.

Mike returned to yachting in 1998 and after 11 years as a captain on large motor yachts, he returned to land and managed a large yacht training school in the US.

In 2013 Mike returned to sea as a captain but still holds the RYA Yachtmaster Examiner qualification and regularly examines ‘yachties’ seeking their first command licence.
